Janet Parker

... was a 40–year–old medical photographer, working at the University of Birmingham Medical School. She was accidentally exposed to a strain of smallpox virus that had been grown in a research laboratory on the floor below her workplace, and the virus probably spread through ducting. The university was prosecuted for breach of Health and Safety legislation.

The last naturally-occurring case of smallpox was diagnosed in October 1977, but the disease was not declared eradicated until 1980.
